MARGOT SPINDELMAN

Her work is part of an artist collective project called Artists-X-Change, which has produced “The Box Project”--a Mixed Box of Original Art to Benefit The Brooklyn Arts Council. Edition One will be presented as part of the finale of Brooklyn Arts Council ’s current Mutual Aid Art Sale , and will be available to the first 20 donors making a contribution of $1000 or more. All funds raised by the “The Box Project” will go to The Brooklyn Arts Council who will distribute funds according to their own well-established criteria.

Introduction   Human beings make assumptions. Our biggest assumption is to think we know enough. Yet circumstances can affect us, shake us up, make us consider new sources. The extended consideration of an esthetic event is one of these. Those of us who attend many exhibitions can become jaded. The eye closes up. The mind takes over, though the mind refuses to think. The mind that denies is the opposite of the mind that is inspired.   We are inspired most when we expect more from others, when we are filled by their passion, their brilliance, and their own openness. When it comes to an artist or an author who has been around a long time and is known for one sort of thing, or who is deceased, their accomplishment are known, sometimes habitually celebrated, but the eye (or the mind) no longer perceives these accomplishments actively. DENATURED TRUTHS: THE SCULPTURES OF KATHLEEN ELLIOT

ESSAY BY DAVID GIBSON The artist is a natural idealist who begins with form and ends with meaning. When Kathleen Elliot first began to discover herself as an artist she had an immediate interest in the use of glass to create forms reminiscent of nature itself—branches presenting leaves, flowers, and fruit, which over time coalesced into abstract forms as doppelgangers for the real objects she wished to emulate. Every artist develops a world view through their work that may not manifest in linguistic terms. However, the protracted activity of art making, developing the channels of meaning, and growing through the stages of one's discipline, makes one adroitly sensitive to the importance of a value system to accompany it.
